Driveline layouts
Most Japanese pickups, including the Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max and Mitsubishi Triton, use a longitudinal engine, manual or automatic transmission, a transfer case on 4WD versions, a two-piece rear propeller shaft on longer wheelbases, and a solid rear axle. 4WD versions add a front differential and CV drive shafts on independent front suspension. Light trucks such as the Isuzu NPR are rear-wheel drive with a multi-piece propeller shaft and heavy-duty clutch.
What drives replacement
- Clutches: overloading, towing, riding the clutch, hill starts, and water or oil contamination. Clutch life on work pickups is often much shorter than on private vehicles.
- CV joints: torn boots admitting dust and water, lifted suspension angles, and aggressive off-road use.
- U-joints and center bearings: lack of greasing, water crossings, and driveline vibration from worn mounts.
- Differentials: oil leaks, overheating and shock loads from wheelspin.
Dual-mass flywheels
Some newer diesel pickups use dual-mass flywheels to reduce drivetrain vibration. These wear and are expensive to replace; conversion kits to single-mass flywheels exist in the aftermarket, but they change vibration behavior and should be offered with clear information.
Identification
Clutch parts are specified by diameter, spline count and diameter, pressure plate type and bolt pattern. CV joints are identified by spline counts, ABS ring and seal diameters. Propeller shaft parts depend on U-joint cap diameter, width and retention type. When references are incomplete, use RFQ upload with dimensions and photos.
Automatic transmissions
Automatic transmissions have become more common on newer pickups and SUVs in many markets. They reduce clutch demand but create demand for transmission mounts, filters, cooler lines and seal kits. Distributors should review the manual-to-automatic ratio of the local vehicle parc by model year when deciding clutch kit depth, because older manual vehicles will continue to dominate clutch demand for years while the newer automatic share grows.
Buying and specification checklist
Clutch parts
- Provide OEM number, engine code, transmission code and year. Clutch sizes can change between power outputs of the same engine.
- Confirm disc diameter, spline count and spline diameter, pressure plate type (push or pull, diaphragm), and flywheel type (single-mass or dual-mass).
- Decide between kits (disc, cover and release bearing, sometimes pilot bearing and alignment tool) and individual components.
- For heavy-duty users, consider reinforced facings or higher clamp-load covers, and explain the pedal-feel trade-off to customers.
Driveline parts
- CV joints: outer and inner joint spline counts, ABS ring tooth count, seal diameters, left or right side.
- U-joints: cap diameter, overall width, retention type (inside or outside circlips) and greaseable or sealed design.
- Differential parts: ratio, tooth counts, axle model and number of splines.
Quality checks
Clutch facing bonding and rivet quality, pressure plate clamp load consistency, disc runout, CV boot material and grease fill, and U-joint needle bearing retention.
Packaging
Clutch kits are heavy and should be packed in rigid boxes with internal separators so the disc facing is not damaged by the cover. Drive shafts and propeller shafts are long and need individual protection for splines and boots.

Product types in detail
Clutch Discs
The clutch disc (friction plate) connects the engine flywheel to the transmission input shaft. It is the main wear component of a manual clutch and the part most affected by overloading, towing and slipping. Browse clutch discs in the catalogue.
Construction
- Friction facings – usually organic composite on both sides for smooth engagement. Heavy-duty discs may use cerametallic (ceramic-metallic) buttons for higher heat resistance at the cost of harsher engagement and faster flywheel wear.
- Cushion springs (marcel) – wave springs between facings that smooth engagement.
- Torsional damper springs – coil springs in the hub that absorb driveline vibration. Diesel engines place heavy demands on damper springs.
- Splined hub – must match the transmission input shaft spline count and diameter.
Variants

Specifications
Outer diameter, inner facing diameter, spline count, spline major diameter, hub offset or stand-out, facing material and damper design. Some pickups use different disc sizes for different engine outputs, and truck discs vary by gearbox model. Discs for light trucks such as the Isuzu NPR are larger and heavier than pickup discs.

Why kits matter for pickups
Pickups such as the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux are widely used as work vehicles with manual transmissions. Clutch replacement requires removing the gearbox, so labor is significant, and workshops prefer to replace every wear part at once. A kit that omits the release bearing or includes a mismatched cover leads to repeat work.

Disc diameter and spline, cover bolt pattern and clamp load, release bearing type (conventional or CSC) and bore, pilot bearing dimensions, and flywheel type. Engine and transmission code matter more than vehicle name, since clutch sizes change with engine output and gearbox generation.

CV Joints & Boots
Constant velocity (CV) joints transfer torque through the changing angles of front drive shafts while allowing steering and suspension movement. On 4WD pickups with independent front suspension, such as the Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max and Mitsubishi Triton, CV joints are heavily loaded in 4WD and are a common off-road wear item. Joint types
- Outer joints (Rzeppa or ball-type) – at the wheel end, allowing large steering angles.
- Inner joints – at the differential end, typically tripod (tripod roller) or double offset joints (DOJ), allowing plunge as the suspension moves.
- CV boot kits – rubber or thermoplastic boots with clamps and grease.

Boots and grease
Boot material matters. Chloroprene rubber boots are flexible and common; thermoplastic (TPE) boots resist cuts and heat better but need correct clamping tools. Grease must be CV-specific molybdenum or synthetic grease in the correct quantity.
Failure drivers
Torn boots are the root cause in most CV joint failures. Lifted suspensions increase joint angles and boot stress, and water crossings wash out grease if boots are damaged. Clicking when turning indicates outer joint wear; vibration under acceleration indicates inner joint wear.
