Bearings in pickup and truck applications
Pickups have front wheel bearings on independent suspension knuckles and rear axle bearings on the live axle. 4WD versions differ from 2WD versions. Commercial trucks use large tapered roller bearing sets in the hub, serviced with seals and grease. Water crossings, overloading and incorrect preload are the most common causes of premature bearing failure. Bearings are identified by inner diameter, outer diameter and width, plus seal type and any ABS encoder ring.
Belt drives
Older common-rail diesel engines such as Toyota's KD family and Mitsubishi's 4D56 use timing belts, while many newer engines use timing chains or gears (listed under engine components). Accessory drives use ribbed belts, with tensioners that lose damping over time. Heat, dust and oil contamination shorten belt life in hot climates. Belts are identified by length, rib or tooth count, profile and width.
Why quality control matters
Counterfeit and substandard bearings are a well-known issue in the global aftermarket. Distributors should expect consistent dimensional accuracy, proper heat treatment and correct grease fill, and should inspect markings and packaging on arrival. Belt compounds (for example HNBR for timing belts) affect life at high temperature.
Stocking logic
Bearings and belts reward reference-level analysis. A limited number of bearing sizes and ribbed belt codes cover a large share of pickups and light trucks, while timing belts are engine-specific and should be stocked according to the engine families that dominate the local vehicle parc. Distributors serving truck fleets need wheel-end bearing sets and seals for the main chassis models, typically in smaller quantities but with higher value per line.

Buying and specification checklist
Bearings
- Provide OEM number and position: front or rear, inner or outer, left or right where relevant.
- Confirm ID, OD and width, seal type (rubber-sealed 2RS, shielded ZZ or open) and any integrated ABS encoder or sensor.
- For hub assemblies, include bolt pattern, number of studs, flange type and ABS configuration.
- Check whether bearings are supplied as sets (cone and cup together) or separately.
- Include seals and lock nuts in the order where the service requires them.
Belts
- Provide OEM number, engine code and whether the vehicle has air-conditioning or power steering, as accessory belt lengths change with equipment.
- For timing belts, confirm tooth count, width and tooth profile; for ribbed belts, rib count, profile and effective length.
- Consider stocking timing belt kits for popular engines to encourage complete replacement of tensioners and idlers.
Packaging and handling
Bearings need rust-inhibiting packaging and should not be opened before fitting. Belts should be packed flat or loosely coiled without sharp bends or crushing, and kept away from heat and ozone. Label cartons clearly because belt references can look identical.
Anti-counterfeit and traceability
Record batch and origin information on arrival, and train warehouse staff to spot inconsistent printing or packaging.
Consolidation
Bearings are dense; belts are light. Both combine well with brakes, suspension and filters in a mixed container.
Product types in detail
Wheel Bearings
Wheel bearings support vehicle weight and allow the wheel to rotate with minimal friction. They operate under combined radial and axial loads, and on pickups and trucks they endure heavy payload, rough roads and water ingress. Browse wheel bearings in the catalogue.
Bearing types
- Tapered roller bearings – separate cone and cup, used in pairs (inner and outer) with adjustable preload. Common on older pickup front hubs, many rear axles and truck hubs.
- Angular contact ball bearings – double-row sealed bearings pressed into knuckles, typical of front-wheel-drive and some SUV applications.
- Hub bearing units – bearings integrated into a flange or hub (often called Gen 1, Gen 2 and Gen 3 designs), with Gen 3 units bolting on as complete assemblies. See hub assemblies.
- Rear axle shaft bearings – pressed onto semi-floating axle shafts, often with a retaining ring and seal.
ABS encoders
Many sealed bearings include a magnetic encoder ring in the seal for active ABS sensors. These must be installed facing the sensor, and a bearing without the encoder will trigger ABS warnings. Specifications should state whether the encoder is included.
Failure drivers
Water and mud entering through damaged seals, especially after water crossings; overloading; incorrect preload on tapered bearings; impact damage; and poor-quality grease or steel. Symptoms are humming noise, play and ABS faults.
Identification
Inner diameter, outer diameter, width, bearing series, seal type and position. 4WD pickups with independent front suspension, such as the Mitsubishi Triton, use different front bearing arrangements from 2WD versions. Trucks such as the Hino 500 use large tapered sets per wheel end.
Ordering checklist
- OEM number and position: front/rear, inner/outer, and whether the vehicle is 2WD or 4WD.
- Dimensions: ID × OD × width, and bearing designation where available.
- Seal and encoder: sealed, shielded or open; magnetic encoder included or not.
- Set definition: cone and cup together, or individual components; inner and outer bearings for one wheel.
- Seals and nuts: order hub seals and lock nuts or retaining rings to complete the job.
- Quality checks: consistent markings, smooth rotation without roughness, correct grease fill for sealed units, and rust-free raceways.
- Packaging: VCI or oiled wrapping in individual boxes. Moisture during sea freight is a major risk for unprotected bearings.
- Traceability: record batch codes and supplier origin on arrival to support warranty claims and counterfeit checks.
- Grease and seal specification: for markets with frequent water crossings, ask about seal design (multi-lip contact seals) and grease type, since these determine life more than the steel alone.
- Truck wheel ends: order bearing sets, hub seals and hub caps together for fleet service kits.
Timing Belts
A timing belt synchronizes the crankshaft with the camshaft and, on many diesel engines, the injection pump or balance shafts. On interference engines, a belt failure lets pistons and valves collide, so timing belts are replaced at fixed intervals whether or not they show wear. Browse timing belts in the catalogue.
Construction
- Tensile cords – typically fiberglass, sometimes aramid, which provide dimensional stability.
- Body compound – chloroprene (CR) on older designs, and HNBR (hydrogenated nitrile) on most modern engines for heat and oil resistance.
- Tooth facing – nylon fabric that resists tooth wear.
- Tooth profile – trapezoidal on older engines, curvilinear (round or modified round) profiles on most modern designs. Profiles are not interchangeable.
Belts carry printed direction arrows and sometimes timing marks that align with sprocket marks. Workshops rely on these, so print clarity is a practical quality point.
Applications
Belt-driven engines remain common in export markets, including Toyota's 1KD and 2KD common-rail diesels, Mitsubishi's 4D56 diesel with its separate balance shaft belt, and many gasoline engines. Newer engines increasingly use chains or gears, covered in timing components.
Why belts fail early
Oil or coolant leaks contaminating the belt, seized idlers or tensioners, dust ingress, extreme heat, incorrect tension at installation and belts that have aged in storage. Ordering checklist
- OEM number and engine code; the same model can use different belts for gasoline and diesel engines or across engine updates.
- Belt data: tooth count, width and tooth profile. Check the reference against the OEM, since visual similarity is misleading.
- Balance shaft belts: order separately where the engine uses a second belt.
- Compound: HNBR is expected on modern engines; confirm material on offers.
- Kits vs belts: stock both, but encourage kits for engines with known tensioner or idler wear issues.
- Storage: belts should be stored flat or loosely coiled in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, ozone sources such as electric motors, and chemicals. Avoid kinking; bending a belt sharply can break the tensile cords.
- Packaging: individual sleeves or boxes with printed reference and engine application; master cartons should prevent crushing.
- Stock age: rotate stock and record manufacturing dates, since rubber compounds age even when unused.
Serpentine (Ribbed) Belts
Serpentine or multi-rib belts drive the alternator, water pump, air-conditioning compressor, power steering pump and sometimes the vacuum pump or fan from the crankshaft pulley. Profiles and dimensions
Automotive ribbed belts mostly use the PK profile, with a reference such as 6PK1870 describing 6 ribs, PK profile and 1,870 mm effective length. Some heavy-duty applications use PL or other profiles. Rib count and length must match the drive; even small length differences can put the tensioner outside its working range.
Materials
Modern belts use EPDM compounds that resist heat and cracking far better than older chloroprene belts. EPDM belts may wear by losing rib material rather than visibly cracking, so wear gauges are more reliable than visual checks.
Variants
- Stretch-fit (elastic) belts – used on some drives without a tensioner and installed with special tools.
- Double-sided belts – ribs on both sides for drives where pulleys run on the back of the belt.
- Equipment-dependent lengths – vehicles with and without air-conditioning or power steering often use different belts.
Wear drivers
Tensioner damping loss, worn belt tensioners and idlers, misaligned pulleys, dust and grit, and fluid leaks. High ambient temperatures and constant air-conditioning use in hot climates increase belt load. For truck applications such as the Isuzu NPR, belt layouts vary with equipment such as exhaust brakes and air compressors.
Ordering checklist
- OEM number or engine code plus equipment: with or without A/C, power steering, and any additional accessories.
- Belt designation: rib count, profile and effective length (for example 7PK1520).
- Construction: EPDM expected; confirm stretch-fit or double-sided designs where applicable.
- Tensioners and idlers: ordering these alongside belts reduces comebacks, especially on high-mileage engines.
- Packaging: individual sleeves printed with the belt code; keep belts flat and away from heat and ozone in storage.
- Stock planning: a relatively small number of belt codes cover many vehicles, which makes serpentine belts an efficient line to stock deeply.
- Labeling: belts of similar length look identical on the shelf. Clear printing on the belt itself and on packaging prevents picking errors.
- Cross-references: keep a table linking OEM numbers to belt designations. Many OEM part numbers resolve to the same rib count and length, which lets you cover more vehicles with fewer codes.
- Quality checks: check rib profile consistency and length tolerance on samples; a belt that is slightly long can leave the tensioner at the end of its travel.
