About V-Belts
V-belts drive alternators, water pumps, fans, air-conditioning compressors and power steering pumps on older vehicles and many trucks and buses. Section profiles include classical (A, B, C), narrow (SPA, SPB, SPZ) and automotive sizes identified by top width and effective or outside length.
Raw-edge cogged belts flex better around small pulleys and run cooler, while wrapped belts are traditional. Belts on twin-belt drives should be replaced as matched sets. Specifications are top width, length measurement type (inside, outside or effective) and construction. Heat, oil contamination and misaligned pulleys cause glazing and cracking.
