About Steering Racks & Gearboxes

Steering racks and gearboxes translate steering wheel rotation into wheel movement. Pickups and SUVs with independent front suspension generally use rack-and-pinion units, while beam-axle trucks and older 4x4s use recirculating-ball gearboxes.

Racks are hydraulic (with pressure and return ports) or electric (with integrated or column-mounted assist). Key specifications are drive side (LHD and RHD racks are not interchangeable), mounting points, overall length, port threads and pinion spline. New and remanufactured units are available in the market; remanufactured units are commonly sold with a core charge. Racks are bulky and should be packed in rigid cartons with port caps.
