A region of small, mixed markets
The Caribbean is made up of many island and coastal markets, each with a modest vehicle parc and a strong dependence on imports for both vehicles and parts. Japanese brands are well represented, including pickups such as the Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara and Mitsubishi Triton, SUVs, compact sedans and light trucks used in distribution and construction. Because individual markets are small, importers often need a wide assortment in modest quantities per line, which makes consolidated shipping especially important.
Traffic side varies island by island
The Caribbean is a mixed traffic region:
- Drive on the left (mostly right-hand-drive vehicles): Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados and the Bahamas, among others.
- Drive on the right (left-hand-drive vehicles): the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Puerto Rico.
In some left-hand-traffic markets, imported left-hand-drive vehicles are also found in the parc, so importers should check the actual vehicle rather than assume. Thailand's domestic vehicles are right-hand drive. Filters, brake parts, bearings, belts, clutch kits and most engine parts fit regardless of drive side, while steering gear, lamps, mirrors, wiper and dashboard-related parts and some body panels must be specified.

Shipping
Shipping lines serve the Caribbean through a combination of direct calls and regional transshipment hubs. Main gateways include Kingston in Jamaica, Port of Spain and Point Lisas in Trinidad and Tobago, Bridgetown in Barbados, Nassau and Freeport in the Bahamas, and Caucedo and Río Haina in the Dominican Republic. Final routing depends on the carrier and should be confirmed at booking.
