About brake pads

Brake pads are the highest-volume brake part in any distribution range. They are also where friction formulation, backing plate accuracy and hardware make the most visible difference to workshops and end users.

Friction material types

  • NAO (non-asbestos organic) – quiet and gentle on rotors, lower dust; less heat tolerance under repeated heavy braking. Common as original equipment on many Japanese vehicles.
  • Low-metallic – organic base with some metal content for better heat transfer and fade resistance; more dust and noise.
  • Semi-metallic – high steel fiber content, strong fade resistance for heavy loads and towing, but typically noisier and harder on rotors.
  • Ceramic – ceramic fibers and fillers, low dust and noise with stable performance, usually at a higher price point.

Construction details

  • Backing plate thickness and flatness, and mechanical retention or bonding between plate and friction material.
  • Shims – rubber-coated or multilayer steel shims reduce noise.
  • Chamfers and slots – reduce noise and help release gas and dust.
  • Wear indicators – mechanical squealers or electrical sensors; electrical sensors may be sold separately.
  • Underlayer – a layer between plate and friction material improves bonding and damping.

Pickup relevance

Front pads on pickups such as the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux often work at high temperatures when vehicles carry payload or tow. Caliper designs may vary between 2WD, 4WD and pre-runner variants, so check references carefully. Pads are usually replaced alongside brake discs and rotors.

Buying & specification guide

  • OEM number and caliper type; list vehicle, drive type and year when references are incomplete.
  • Dimensions: width, height, thickness and shape outline; FMSI or WVA references help cross-checking where available.
  • Friction grade by segment: heat-resistant grades for fleet and commercial users, low-noise grades for passenger retail.
  • Hardware and sensors: confirm whether shims, clips or electronic wear sensors are included.
  • Documentation: asbestos-free declaration; any local certification requirements are the importer's to confirm.
  • Packaging: axle-set boxes (usually four pads per axle) with clear front/rear labeling.
  • Sample evaluation: before committing volume to a new friction supplier, fit samples to local fleet vehicles and record wear, noise and fade feedback over real routes.
  • Batch consistency: ask how friction mix batches are controlled and marked. Consistent friction behavior between shipments matters as much as initial performance.
  • Weight: pads are dense for their size, so check carton gross weights for manual handling.

Are ceramic pads suitable for work pickups?

Some ceramic formulations handle heat well, but for vehicles that regularly carry heavy loads or tow on steep routes, semi-metallic or heavy-duty low-metallic grades are often preferred for fade resistance. Match the grade to real use.

Are electronic wear sensors included with pads?

It varies by reference and supplier. Sensors are frequently sold separately. Confirm in the quotation to avoid incomplete kits.

Why do some pads squeal after installation?

Common causes include missing or reused shims, glazed or uneven rotors, lack of chamfers and incorrect bedding-in. Pads supplied with the correct hardware reduce noise complaints.
