Cameroon's vehicle and parts market

Cameroon is the largest economy in the CEMAC zone and a logistics hub for Central Africa. Douala, the economic capital, is home to much of the country's parts wholesale trade and serves as a supply point for traders from Chad and the Central African Republic.

The parc combines used passenger cars with a substantial fleet of pickups and 4x4 vehicles. Toyota Hilux and Land Cruiser-type vehicles are widely used by companies, public services and NGOs, and Mitsubishi, Nissan and Isuzu pickups are also common. Timber, cocoa, coffee and general freight move by truck over long distances, and many routes outside the main corridors are unpaved and difficult in the rainy season. Heavy trucks on the Douala–N'Djamena and Douala–Bangui transit corridors add demand for heavy-duty parts.

Left-hand-drive vehicles and Thai parts

Cameroon drives on the right, so vehicles are left-hand drive. Thailand's domestic vehicles are right-hand drive. The good news for importers is that most high-turnover parts are drive-side independent: filters, brake pads, shoes and drums, wheel bearings, belts, clutch kits, shock absorbers and engine components. Steering racks and boxes, lamps, mirrors, wiper linkages, dashboard parts and some body panels are side-specific and must be ordered in left-hand-drive versions with the OEM reference.

Categories suited to local conditions

• Suspension and steering: shock absorbers, leaf spring components, bushings and ball joints for vehicles on rough roads.
• Bearings and belts and clutch and driveline parts for heavily loaded vehicles and 4x4 drivetrains.
• Filters: air filters for dusty dry-season roads and fuel filters and water separators for diesel engines in a humid climate.

Ports: Douala and Kribi

• Douala: the main port for Cameroon and the traditional gateway for Chad and the Central African Republic. Access is via the Wouri river estuary.
• Kribi: a deep-water port in the south with a modern container terminal, able to receive larger vessels.

The best port depends on the buyer's warehouse location and shipping line options; your clearing agent can advise.

Cargo tracking note (BESC) and documents

Imports into Cameroon require an electronic cargo tracking note (Bordereau Électronique de Suivi des Cargaisons, BESC). Procedures and responsibilities can change, so buyers should confirm the current requirements with their clearing agent and advise us of what information is needed before loading. We supply the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin. For transit cargo to Chad or the Central African Republic, additional transit documentation is needed.

Language and currency

Cameroon has two official languages, French and English, and French is more widely used in business in Douala. The currency is the Central African CFA franc (XAF), pegged to the euro. RFQs can be submitted in English.
