About Hub Assemblies

Hub assemblies combine the wheel flange, bearing and often the ABS sensor or encoder into one replaceable unit. They reduce labor time compared with pressing bearings, and are common on SUVs, crossovers and the front of some pickups and vans.

Specifications include flange bolt pattern and number of mounting bolts, wheel stud count and size, pilot diameter, spline count for driven hubs, ABS sensor type and connector, and 2WD or 4WD application. Some 4WD pickups use manual or automatic free-wheeling hubs, which are separate components. Hub assemblies are heavier and more valuable than bare bearings; pack them in rigid boxes with flange and spline protection. See wheel bearings.
