About radiators

Radiators transfer heat from engine coolant to the air. For pickups, vans and trucks operating in hot climates with heavy loads, radiator condition directly determines whether an engine can hold normal temperature on long climbs and in slow traffic.

Construction types

  • Aluminum core with plastic tanks – brazed aluminum tubes and fins with nylon tanks crimped onto the header plates. Standard on most modern vehicles. Tank cracks and gasket leaks at the crimp are typical failures.
  • All-aluminum radiators – welded aluminum tanks, common in aftermarket upgrade and heavy-duty options.
  • Copper-brass radiators – soldered copper fins and brass tubes, with brass or bolted tanks. Heavier and more expensive in material, but repairable by radiator shops. Still common on many trucks and in some aftermarket segments.

Core design

Core thickness, number of tube rows, tube width and fin density determine capacity. A thicker core does not automatically cool better if fin density restricts airflow in dusty conditions. Louvered fins improve heat transfer but clog more readily.

Transmission and accessories

Automatic transmission radiators include an oil cooler inside the outlet tank, with threaded or quick-connect fittings. Some radiators also carry mounts for fan shrouds, condenser brackets and temperature sensors.

Applications

Pickups such as the Mitsubishi Triton and Toyota Hilux use different radiators by engine, transmission and generation. Truck radiators for chassis like the Isuzu NPR are larger and often mounted with rubber isolators to absorb chassis flex.

Buying & specification guide

  • OEM number plus engine code, transmission type (MT/AT) and year.
  • Core dimensions: width, height and thickness, and number of rows.
  • Connections: inlet and outlet diameter and position (left/right, top/bottom), drain plug location, and filler neck or cap location.
  • Transmission cooler: present or not; fitting thread or quick-connect type.
  • Construction: aluminum-plastic, all-aluminum or copper-brass; tank material and gasket type.
  • Mounting: pins, brackets, and fan shroud attachment points.
  • Testing: ask whether every radiator is leak-tested before packing and what test method is used.
  • Packaging: individual cartons with rigid face protection, capped inlets and outlets, and reinforced corners. Radiators are among the most damage-prone items in a parts shipment.
  • Container planning: radiators use space quickly. Request carton dimensions for every reference before finalizing a mixed load, and avoid stacking dense cartons on top of them.
  • Warranty handling: agree a claim procedure with suppliers before shipping. Leaks caused by transit damage and leaks caused by manufacturing defects need to be distinguished, which requires photos on arrival.

Frequently asked questions

Can a thicker aftermarket radiator fix overheating?

It can help if the original radiator is undersized for the vehicle's use, but overheating usually has other causes such as a failed fan clutch, blocked fins, a sticking thermostat or head gasket issues. Diagnose before upgrading.

Do radiators include the cap and drain plug?

It depends on the reference. Drain plugs are often included; caps frequently are not. Confirm contents at quotation stage.

Why do plastic radiator tanks crack?

Repeated heating and cooling, excessive system pressure from a faulty cap or head gasket, and aging of the plastic all contribute. Vibration and incorrect mounting can accelerate cracking.
