Automotive Parts Export to Africa from Thailand

A continent of very different vehicle markets

Africa is not one aftermarket. Traffic side, dominant vehicle origin, port access and import regulation all change from one subregion to the next, and a parts order that suits a distributor in Mombasa may be wrong in detail for a buyer in Abidjan. What the markets share is a heavy reliance on durable Japanese-brand pickups, light trucks and minibuses, long service lives, and demanding operating conditions that make routine maintenance parts the backbone of the aftermarket.

Thailand is one of the world's main production bases for one-ton pickups such as the Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max, Mitsubishi Triton, Ford Ranger and Nissan Navara, and it has a deep supplier base for filters, brake parts, bearings, suspension and engine components that fit these platforms and the light trucks built on related engines.

Traffic side: the first thing to specify

• Right-hand traffic (left-hand-drive vehicles): most of West and Central Africa, including Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal and Cameroon.
• Left-hand traffic (right-hand-drive vehicles): much of East and Southern Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, South Africa and Zambia.

The Thai domestic market drives on the left, so its vehicles are right-hand drive. Filters, brake pads and shoes, bearings, belts, clutch kits and most engine parts are independent of drive side. Steering racks and boxes, some headlamps, mirrors, wiper linkages, dashboard-related parts and certain body panels are side-specific and must be identified by chassis code, VIN or OEM part number.

Subregional overviews

• West Africa: large port-driven markets with a mixed parc of new and used vehicles and a strong trade in pickups and light commercial vehicles.
• East Africa: a right-hand-drive parc built largely on Japanese imports, with minibuses and light trucks central to public transport and distribution, served mainly through Mombasa and Dar es Salaam.
• Central Africa: Douala and Kribi serve Cameroon and inland neighbors, with French the main commercial language.
• Southern Africa: a large pickup market with local vehicle assembly, plus landlocked mining economies reached through several port corridors.

What African buyers typically order together

Because freight is a significant part of landed cost, most buyers combine several product lines in one shipment: fast-moving service parts for pickups and trucks, batteries, tires and accessories. Trade terms and documents

Quotations can be prepared on FOB, CFR, CIF, EXW or FCA terms. Standard export documents include the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin. Several African countries run pre-shipment conformity or cargo tracking programs; requirements change, so buyers should confirm the current rules with their clearing agent before shipment.
