Kenya's vehicle parc

Kenya drives on the left, and its vehicle parc is dominated by right-hand-drive Japanese vehicles. A large share of cars, vans and light commercial vehicles enter the country as used imports, mainly from Japan, while new pickups and trucks are sold through local dealer networks, some of them assembled in Kenya.

Several vehicle groups drive the aftermarket:

• Matatus: the privately operated minibuses at the heart of public transport, commonly based on the Toyota HiAce and Nissan Urvan (NV350 and earlier Caravan platforms). They run long hours with frequent stops and heavy loads, so brakes, clutches, suspension, wheel bearings and filters turn over quickly.
• Buses and trucks: Isuzu light and medium trucks, including the NQR and FRR, are widely used as truck chassis and as the base for mid-size buses. Fuso Canter and Fighter and Hino trucks are also common in distribution and construction.
• Pickups and SUVs: Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max, Nissan Navara and Mitsubishi Triton pickups serve farms, businesses and county governments, and 4x4 SUVs are common in the tourism and NGO sectors.

Why right-hand drive matters

Because Kenya's parc is right-hand drive, it aligns with Thai domestic vehicles. This is a practical advantage for side-specific parts such as steering racks and boxes, headlamps, mirrors, wiper linkages, dashboard components and some body panels, which Thai suppliers commonly carry in right-hand-drive versions. Fitment still depends on model generation and market specification: a used import from Japan may differ in engine or equipment from a Thai-built or locally assembled version, so OEM numbers or chassis codes should be provided.

Filters, brake parts, bearings, belts and engine components are drive-side independent.

Port of Mombasa

Mombasa is Kenya's main seaport and East Africa's busiest container gateway. It is the start of the Northern Corridor, which also serves Uganda, Rwanda, South Sudan and eastern DR Congo. Cargo can move from Mombasa inland by road or on the Standard Gauge Railway to Nairobi and the Nairobi Inland Container Depot, where some imports are cleared. Tell us whether the bill of lading should show Mombasa or an inland destination, based on your clearing agent's advice. The Port of Lamu on the northern coast is a more recent addition.

PVoC and import documentation

The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) operates a Pre-Export Verification of Conformity (PVoC) program under which many regulated products, which can include motor vehicle parts, batteries and tires, require a Certificate of Conformity before shipment. Scope and procedures change, so buyers should confirm the current requirements with their clearing agent and tell us at the RFQ stage, because inspection must be arranged before the container is loaded.

We supply the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin.

Container planning

Kenyan importers often build containers around matatu and truck service parts, adding batteries and tires to use available weight. Our mixed-container service handles this kind of consolidated load, with a packing list itemized to support PVoC and customs clearance. FOB, CFR, CIF, EXW and FCA terms are available; CIF or CFR Mombasa is common for buyers without a Thai forwarder.

RFQ process

Send your parts list with OEM numbers or chassis codes through RFQ upload or the RFQ form. RFQs can be submitted in English. We check fitment and availability, confirm the PVoC approach you have agreed with your clearing agent, and return a quotation with packing and trade terms.
