About brake discs & rotors

Brake discs, also called rotors, convert braking energy into heat. On pickups and SUVs the front discs carry most of the braking load and are frequently replaced with pads, especially where vehicles carry payload or operate on hilly terrain.

Types

  • Vented discs – two friction faces separated by cooling vanes. Standard on the front axle of most pickups and SUVs.
  • Solid discs – single-piece friction ring, typically on rear axles of lighter vehicles.
  • Hat or drum-in-hat discs – rear discs with an integral parking brake drum.
  • Hub-and-disc assemblies – some 2WD pickups and older vehicles combine the hub and disc, which affects bearing replacement and pricing.
  • Drilled and slotted discs – performance options; not always ideal for heavy-duty use because drilled holes can crack under heat cycles.

Specifications

Outer diameter, thickness, minimum thickness (usually cast or stamped on the disc), overall height, center bore, bolt circle and number of holes, and vane direction for directional discs. Casting grade and balancing affect vibration and judder complaints.

Corrosion and handling

Discs are cast iron and rust quickly in humid sea freight if unprotected. Painted hats and edges, zinc-based coatings or oil film with VCI packaging reduce rust claims. Discs are heavy, which helps balance lighter lines such as filters in a mixed container, but carton strength must match the weight. Pair with brake pads.

  • OEM number plus model, drive type and year; 2WD and 4WD versions often differ.
  • Dimensions: OD, thickness, minimum thickness, height, center bore, PCD and hole count.
  • Type: vented or solid, directional or not, with or without integrated hub.
  • Finish: request details of anti-corrosion coating or oiling and packaging.
  • Unit of sale: per piece or per pair.
  • Packaging: individual boxes with strong master cartons or palletization; confirm gross weight per carton for handling limits.
  • Quality checks: ask about lateral runout and thickness variation tolerances, and whether discs are balanced. These are the most common sources of pedal pulsation complaints.
  • Paired sales: stock pads for the same references in matching depth, as most disc sales include a pad set.
  • Load planning: as a heavy, compact line, discs are useful for filling the weight capacity of a container that would otherwise cube out on lighter parts.

Frequently asked questions

Should brake discs be replaced every time pads are changed?

Not necessarily. Discs are replaced when they fall below minimum thickness or show deep scoring, cracking or warping. Heavy-use pickups often reach that point every one or two pad changes.

Do coated discs need the coating removed before fitting?

Most modern coatings on friction surfaces wear off during bedding-in and do not need removal; oil-based rust protection must be cleaned off. Follow the supplier's instruction for each finish.
