About control arms (upper & lower)

Control arms connect the wheel knuckle to the chassis and locate the wheel through its travel. On double-wishbone front suspensions used by most Japanese pickups, each side has an upper and a lower arm, and both carry bushings and ball joints that wear on rough roads.

Design variants

  • Stamped steel arms – pressed and welded, common on OE upper arms.
  • Forged or cast arms – stronger and often used for lower arms that carry spring loads.
  • Tubular aftermarket arms – used on lifted 4x4s to correct ball joint angle and caster, often with greaseable joints and adjustable geometry.
  • Complete arms vs components – arms may be supplied with pressed-in bushings and ball joints, or as bare arms, with joints and bushings sold separately.

Why arms are replaced

Worn bushings cause clunks and alignment drift; worn ball joints cause play and steering vagueness; bent arms result from impacts on rough terrain. In some vehicles the ball joint is riveted or integral to the arm, so the whole arm is the service part. On lifted pickups, standard upper arms can bind at the ball joint, which is why aftermarket upper arms are sold with lift kits.

Identification

Position (upper/lower, front/rear), side (left/right), 2WD/4WD, and bushing and ball joint configuration. Details such as ABS sensor cable brackets and stabilizer link mounts differ between versions. Buying & specification guide

  • OEM number for the arm, and whether the OEM supplies the ball joint separately.
  • Position and side on every line: front upper left, front lower right and so on.
  • Vehicle variant: 2WD, high-ride 2WD, 4WD; standard or lifted height.
  • Included components: bushings, ball joint, nut and cotter pin, bump stop.
  • Construction: stamped, forged or tubular; confirm material and finish (e-coat, powder coat, zinc).
  • Aftermarket arms: check adjustable caster, joint type (greaseable or sealed, uniball) and whether they are intended for a specific lift height.
  • Packaging: individual boxes to protect ball joint boots and threads; heavy lower arms should be separated so they cannot damage one another.
  • Alignment note: remind workshops that arm replacement requires a wheel alignment, especially on vehicles with eccentric cam bolts at the arm pivots.
  • Stock planning: sides do not wear at identical rates, so stock left and right in proportion to actual sales history rather than strictly in pairs.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to replace the arm or just the bushings and ball joint?

Where bushings and joints are serviceable, replacing them is cheaper but requires press tools. Many workshops prefer complete arms to save labor, especially where corrosion makes pressing difficult.

Why do lifted pickups use aftermarket upper arms?

Lifting increases the upper ball joint angle, which can cause binding and wear and limit caster adjustment. Aftermarket upper arms correct geometry for the lifted ride height.
