How to Order Mixed Auto Parts Containers from Thailand

A step-by-step guide to planning a mixed auto parts container from Thailand: building the parts list, consolidation, container selection, loading constraints, documents and Incoterms.

Most importers do not need a full container of a single part number. A distributor supplying workshops in Nairobi, a fleet operator in the Gulf or a parts retailer in the Caribbean typically needs hundreds of different lines, from filters and brake pads to suspension joints, batteries and tires, in quantities that justify a container only when combined. A mixed container consolidates these lines from multiple product categories and manufacturers into one shipment, with one set of export documents.

This guide explains how the process works and how to plan an order that loads efficiently and clears customs without delays.

Step 1: Build a structured parts list

The quality of the parts list determines the speed and accuracy of the quotation. Each line should carry an OEM or reference part number, description, vehicle application, quantity and any brand or quality-tier preference. Group lines by category, for example filters, brakes, suspension, electrical, batteries and tires. This helps with sourcing, with packing and with customs classification later.

Step 2: Validation and quotation

Before quoting, part numbers are validated: superseded numbers are identified, duplicates are merged, ambiguous lines are queried, and alternatives are proposed where a requested brand or tier is unavailable. Expect questions on lines with missing vehicle details. Clarifying them before order confirmation is far cheaper than dealing with wrong parts after arrival.

Step 3: Choose the container

Container choice depends on both volume and weight. Auto parts cargo varies widely in density.

Approximate figures only; exact dimensions and payload limits vary by container owner, and road weight limits at origin and destination may restrict the practical payload below the container's rating.

Weight-limited cargo. Batteries, brake drums, brake discs, leaf springs and engine components reach the payload limit well before the container is full by volume.

Volume-limited cargo. Tires, radiators, bumpers, canopies, filters in retail cartons and bull bars fill space quickly while remaining light.

A well-planned mixed container balances dense and bulky cargo to use both weight and volume allowance.

Step 4: Consolidation and loading

Parts from different manufacturers and suppliers are received, checked against the order, and consolidated before loading. Good practice includes:

  • Checking quantities and part numbers against the order on receipt
  • Carton marking with part number, quantity and carton number that match the packing list
  • Palletizing heavy or fragile items where appropriate; floor-loading where maximizing volume matters, for example with tires
  • Load planning: heavy items at the bottom and distributed evenly along the floor; fragile parts such as glass, lamps and radiators protected and not under heavy cartons
  • Securing the load with bracing, dunnage or strapping so cargo cannot shift in transit

Step 5: Batteries and dangerous goods

Batteries need particular attention in a mixed container:

  • Filled lead-acid batteries are generally classified as dangerous goods for sea transport, unless the specific battery meets the conditions for an exemption. A container carrying them requires dangerous goods documentation, labeling and a carrier that accepts the booking.
  • Dry-charged batteries without electrolyte are generally not regulated as dangerous goods, but the electrolyte, if shipped, is.
  • Other items that may be regulated include some chemicals such as brake fluid, coolant concentrates, aerosol lubricants and certain adhesives.

Step 6: Documents

A typical export shipment from Thailand includes:

Commercial invoice Value, terms of sale and description for customs
Packing list Carton-level contents, weights and volumes
Bill of lading Carrier's receipt and title document for sea freight
Certificate of origin Required for preferential tariffs or by some destinations
Pre-shipment inspection or conformity certificate Required by some destination countries
Dangerous goods declaration Where regulated cargo is included

For mixed containers, descriptions and HS codes must be accurate line by line or grouped by category. Vague descriptions such as "auto parts" can trigger customs queries at destination. Step 7: Incoterms and shipping

Agree the Incoterms rule early, because it determines who books freight, who insures and where risk transfers. For containerized cargo:

  • FCA (Free Carrier) is the rule designed for goods handed over to a carrier at a terminal or the seller's premises.
  • FOB, CFR and CIF are widely used in practice for sea freight, though they are defined around loading on board the vessel.
  • CIP, DAP and DDP place more responsibility on the seller, up to the destination.

  3. Container size chosen on both weight and volume
  4. Battery supply condition (filled or dry-charged) decided
  5. Destination import requirements confirmed, including any pre-shipment conformity program
  6. Incoterms rule and port of discharge agreed
  7. Document requirements, including certificate of origin, confirmed with your customs broker
