About side steps & running boards
Side steps and running boards improve access to high-riding pickups and SUVs, protect lower body panels from stones and scratches, and give a finished look. Rock sliders go further, protecting sills from damage in off-road use.
Types
- Running boards – flat aluminum extrusions or molded ABS/steel boards with rubber or textured treads. Common OE-style accessory.
- Tube steps (nerf bars) – stainless steel or powder-coated steel tubes with step pads.
- Rock sliders – heavy-gauge steel tubes or box sections mounted to the chassis, designed to carry vehicle weight when sliding over rocks, often with integrated steps.
- Electric retractable steps – deploy when doors open and retract while driving, with motorized mechanisms.
Mounting
Most side steps use brackets bolting into existing chassis or body mounting points. Bracket design depends on model generation, cab type and sometimes 2WD/4WD or wide-body variants. Rock sliders mount directly to the chassis rails with heavy brackets.

Bracket strength and corrosion protection, tread grip when wet or muddy, finish durability under UV, end cap quality, and fasteners.
