About Timing Belts

A timing belt synchronizes the crankshaft with the camshaft and, on many diesel engines, the injection pump or balance shafts. On interference engines, a belt failure lets pistons and valves collide, so timing belts are replaced at fixed intervals whether or not they show wear.

How can I tell whether an engine uses a timing belt or chain?

Check the OEM parts catalogue or service manual for the engine code. Belt-driven engines have a timing belt part number and usually a plastic timing cover; chain and gear engines do not have a scheduled belt replacement.

Can a timing belt with the same tooth count but a different profile be used?

No. Tooth profiles must match the sprockets. A mismatched profile will wear rapidly or jump teeth, risking engine damage.

Should the water pump be replaced with the timing belt?

On engines where the timing belt drives the water pump, many workshops replace it at the same time to avoid repeat labor. Kits with water pumps are available for some engines.
