About shock absorbers

Shock absorbers control spring movement and keep tires in contact with the road. On pickups and light trucks driven on corrugated roads with heavy loads, they overheat and wear quickly, leading to poor handling, uneven tire wear and faster wear of other suspension parts.

Construction types

  • Twin-tube hydraulic – inner working tube and outer reserve tube with oil only. Simple and economical, but prone to aeration and fade on rough roads.
  • Twin-tube gas (low-pressure) – adds low-pressure nitrogen to reduce oil foaming. The most common replacement type for pickups and passenger vehicles.
  • Monotube (high-pressure gas) – a single tube with a floating piston separating oil and high-pressure gas. Better heat dissipation and consistent damping, common in 4x4 upgrade shocks.
  • Remote or piggyback reservoir – monotube or twin-tube shocks with extra oil capacity for sustained off-road use.
  • Coilover and strut assemblies – shocks combined with coil springs; see struts.

Mounting and dimensions

Shocks are identified by extended length, compressed length, body diameter and upper and lower mount types: eye with bushing, stem (pin) with rubber bushes, or bar/crossbar mount. Front pickup shocks inside the coil spring on independent front suspension differ from rear shocks mounted to a leaf-sprung axle.

Duty levels

Standard OE-equivalent shocks restore original ride. Heavy-duty or load-rated shocks suit vehicles carrying consistent payload. Shocks designed for lifted vehicles have longer lengths to match increased ride height; fitting standard shocks to a lifted vehicle limits droop and can damage the shock. Buying & specification guide

  • OEM number or vehicle details: model, generation, 2WD/4WD, cab type, and whether the vehicle has standard, heavy-duty or lifted suspension.
  • Position: front or rear; left and right are usually identical for shocks but not always for struts.
  • Dimensions: extended length, compressed length, body diameter and mount types at both ends.
  • Construction: twin-tube hydraulic, twin-tube gas or monotube. Price differences between these are significant, so compare like for like.
  • Hardware: confirm bushings, washers and nuts are included.
  • Packaging: individual boxes with rod protection; shocks shipped loose in cartons can suffer bent rods and dented bodies.
  • Storage: shocks stored for long periods should be kept upright or cycled before fitting per supplier guidance, especially twin-tube types.
  • Market segmentation: consider a standard line for passenger and light-use vehicles plus a heavy-duty line for pickup fleets and rural buyers, rather than one compromise grade.

Frequently asked questions

Should shock absorbers be replaced in pairs?

Yes. Replacing shocks on the same axle together keeps damping balanced side to side. Replacing one only is a common cause of handling complaints.

Are gas shocks always better than hydraulic ones?

Gas-charged shocks resist foaming and fade better on rough roads, which suits most pickups. Some buyers still prefer hydraulic shocks for a softer ride or lower price on light-use vehicles.

Can standard shocks be fitted to a lifted pickup?

They are generally too short, which limits suspension droop and can cause the shock to top out and fail. Use shocks designed for the lift height.
