Transmission Filters

Transmission filters protect the valve body and clutch packs of automatic transmissions from friction material and metal particles. Designs include internal pan strainers with felt or mesh media, spin-on external filters on some heavy-duty units, and in-line cooler-return filters.

Replacement is typically done during a fluid and pan-gasket service, so filters are often sold with a pan gasket or O-ring as a kit. The key reference is the transmission model code rather than the vehicle alone, because the same pickup or SUV may be built with different automatic gearboxes by engine and year. Pickups used for towing or in hot climates run higher fluid temperatures, which accelerates fluid breakdown and filter loading. See also filters and gearbox components.
