About clutch discs

The clutch disc (friction plate) connects the engine flywheel to the transmission input shaft. It is the main wear component of a manual clutch and the part most affected by overloading, towing and slipping.

Construction

  • Friction facings – usually organic composite on both sides for smooth engagement. Heavy-duty discs may use cerametallic (ceramic-metallic) buttons for higher heat resistance at the cost of harsher engagement and faster flywheel wear.
  • Cushion springs (marcel) – wave springs between facings that smooth engagement.
  • Torsional damper springs – coil springs in the hub that absorb driveline vibration. Diesel engines place heavy demands on damper springs.
  • Splined hub – must match the transmission input shaft spline count and diameter.

  • Heavy-duty organic discs with higher-friction facings
  • Cerametallic or button-style discs for towing, tipper and high-torque use
  • Discs for dual-mass flywheel applications (often without damper springs) versus discs for single-mass flywheel conversions (with damper springs)

Specifications

Outer diameter, inner facing diameter, spline count, spline major diameter, hub offset or stand-out, facing material and damper design. Some pickups use different disc sizes for different engine outputs, and truck discs vary by gearbox model. Discs for light trucks such as the Isuzu NPR are larger and heavier than pickup discs.

Discs are most often sold in clutch kits, but individual discs are common in markets where workshops reuse covers or rebuild clutches locally.

  • OEM number, engine code, transmission model and year.
  • Dimensions: outer diameter, spline count, spline diameter and hub offset.
  • Facing type: organic, heavy-duty organic or cerametallic; match to vehicle use and customer expectations.
  • Flywheel type: confirm whether the disc is for a dual-mass or single-mass flywheel.
  • Quality checks: facing rivet quality, disc runout, hub spline fit on a sample input shaft, damper spring retention.
  • Packaging: individual boxes that keep facings clean and flat, with protection from moisture and oil.
  • Stock mix: individual discs suit markets with a strong rebuilding culture; kits suit markets where workshops replace complete clutches.
  • Label clarity: mark the flywheel side on the disc and in instructions, since discs installed backwards will not release correctly.
  • Sample testing: before committing volume for a high-use reference, fit samples to fleet vehicles and record engagement quality, judder and slip under load.
  • Heavy-duty communication: cerametallic discs should be clearly labeled as such so that counter staff do not sell them to private owners expecting smooth engagement.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between organic and cerametallic clutch discs?

Organic facings engage smoothly and are quiet, suitable for most vehicles. Cerametallic facings tolerate much higher temperatures for heavy loads and towing, but engagement is harsher and flywheel wear is higher.

Can a disc with the same diameter but a different spline be used?

No. The spline count and diameter must match the transmission input shaft exactly.

Why do clutch discs fail with oil contamination?

Oil from a leaking rear crankshaft seal or input shaft seal soaks into the facing and causes slip and judder. The leak must be repaired before a new disc is fitted.
