About Flywheels
The flywheel provides the friction surface for the clutch disc, carries the starter ring gear and helps smooth engine rotation. Single-mass flywheels can often be resurfaced; dual-mass flywheels (DMF), used on some diesel engines to absorb vibration, contain internal springs and are replaced when worn.
Specifications include clutch diameter, bolt pattern, ring gear tooth count, weight and step height for stepped flywheels, and whether a pilot bearing seat is present. DMF wear symptoms include rattle at idle, clunks on take-off and excessive free rotation. Single-mass conversion kits change noise and vibration behavior and should be supplied with a matched disc.
