Thailand Battery Export Guide

How to source batteries from Thailand for export: specification checks on manufacturers' export ranges, battery freshness, HS codes, certificates of origin, SDS, dangerous goods and mixed containers.

Thailand is an established exporter of lead-acid batteries. UN Comtrade data record Thailand's 2024 exports under HS subheading 8507.10, lead-acid batteries of a kind used for starting piston engines, at about US$174 million, with a further US$67 million under 8507.20 for other lead-acid batteries. For an importer or distributor, a single sourcing country can therefore cover car, pickup, truck, motorcycle and industrial batteries, often in the same shipment as other automotive parts. It also means specifications, documents and dangerous goods rules have to be handled line by line. This guide sets out how a battery program from Thailand is typically specified, documented and shipped, and how the Echo Autoparts request process works.

Start with the specification, not the brand

Battery ranges differ between manufacturers, and between a manufacturer's domestic and export catalogues. Two batteries with the same size code can differ in capacity, cranking performance, terminal type, technology and supply condition. A usable requirement defines the battery, not just the code.

Checking manufacturers' export ranges

When comparing ranges for an export program:

  • Compare like with like. Match the size code, terminal layout and technology first, then compare capacity and cranking values measured under the same standard.
  • Check full dimensions. Total height including terminals and the hold-down style decide whether a battery fits; a length figure alone is not enough.
  • Confirm the terminal post. JIS B-case batteries are made with thin or thick posts, distinguished by the (S) suffix.
  • Ask about supply condition. Some commercial and motorcycle ranges are offered dry-charged, which changes both handling at destination and transport classification.
  • Confirm label content. Rated values, the standard they refer to, the date code and any destination-language warnings should appear on the battery or packaging.

The catalogue shows the manufacturer's published specifications for each listed model. Browse by application from the battery division, or use the battery vehicle finder as a starting point, then confirm fitment against the battery currently in the vehicle.

Freshness: filled and dry-charged batteries

A filled lead-acid battery self-discharges from the day it is charged, and long ocean transit plus warehouse time at destination uses part of its shelf life. GS Yuasa's technical data give practical limits for its automotive batteries:

  • Filled (wet-charged) batteries: check open-circuit voltage monthly and give a refreshing charge below 12.40 V; do not supply a battery to an end user below 12.40 V; scrap batteries that fall below 11.00 V, because the sulfation cannot be fully reversed.
  • Dry-charged batteries: kept cool and dry with the seals intact, they need no other attention, with a maximum storage time of 24 months before filling. At setup they are filled with battery-grade sulphuric acid (specific gravity 1.270–1.280 in GS Yuasa's instructions), rested, checked and charged if needed.

For an export program this translates into three practical measures: record manufacturing date codes on the packing list or inspection report, agree a voltage check before loading and at receipt, and plan order quantities so that filled batteries turn over at destination. Where transit and turnover are long, dry-charged supply is worth considering, remembering that the acid is shipped and handled as a separate regulated product.

HS classification

Under the Harmonized System, batteries are classified in heading 85.07 (electric accumulators):

The WCO correlation table for HS 2028, which takes effect on 1 January 2028, shows no changes to heading 85.07. National tariff lines add further digits; confirm them with the customs broker in both countries.

DFT moved Form D issuance to DFT SMART C/O in April 2025, and electronic Form D data are exchanged between ASEAN member states through the ASEAN Single Window. Used batteries are a separate category

Spent lead-acid batteries are classified separately (HS 8549.11) and are listed as hazardous waste under the Basel Convention. Thailand's Department of Industrial Works is listed as a competent authority for the Convention. The guidance on this page applies to new batteries only.

Ports and dangerous goods handling

Laem Chabang, Thailand's main deep-sea container port, handles dangerous goods including class 8 and class 9 cargo, which is stored only in its dangerous goods warehouses. A 2023 APEC report records Laem Chabang handling 174,938 TEU of dangerous goods in fiscal year 2022. Dangerous goods declarations and warehouse procedures at the port have their own deadlines, so allow for them in the production and shipping schedule.

Consolidating batteries with other parts

Batteries are dense, so a battery-only order often reaches a container's payload limit before its volume limit. Combining batteries with lighter parts can use the container more efficiently, where dangerous goods rules and the carrier allow it:

  • Carrier acceptance first. Regulated battery types need a dangerous goods booking, and carriers can restrict or surcharge them on some routes.
  • Segregation. The IMDG Code requires filled acid batteries to be kept separated from alkalis; check every other regulated item in the same container.
  • Loading. Batteries travel upright on pallets, terminals protected, tiers separated by non-conductive material, on the container floor and braced against movement.
  • Documentation. The dangerous goods declaration and packing certificate cover the regulated lines; the rest of the order moves on the normal commercial documents.

The Echo Autoparts battery request process

  1. Browse and shortlist. Use the battery division by application or standard, for example truck and bus, JIS or forklift and traction batteries, or browse by brand.
  2. Request the availability list. Availability changes constantly and is not published on the website. Request the latest availability list for the battery division and the sales team sends the current workbook.
  3. Send the requirement. Use the battery requirement form for a specification-based request, or upload a parts list combining batteries with other parts. Include the specification items above for each line.
  4. Specification check. Codes, terminal layouts, technology and supply condition are checked against manufacturer data, and ambiguous lines are queried.
  5. Quotation. Quantities, lead times, packing and shipping terms are confirmed in the quotation.
  6. Shipping and documents. Dangerous goods bookings, SDS, certificate of origin and commercial documents are prepared for the agreed Incoterms rule.
