Vehicle Parts Supply for West African Importers

Commercial characteristics

West Africa's coastal markets are major gateways for vehicles and spare parts, both for domestic use and for re-export to landlocked neighbors. The parc is left-hand drive and mixes new vehicles with a large share of imported used vehicles from North America, Europe and Asia. Pickups and light commercial vehicles are essential for trade, agriculture and construction, and minibuses and light trucks carry a large share of passengers and goods.

Parts distribution is often organized around large wholesale markets in the main port cities, where importers supply retailers and workshops across the country and beyond its borders. This favors importers who can offer a broad assortment of fast-moving service parts for many models at once.

Drive side and parts specification

All of the markets covered below drive on the right, so vehicles are left-hand drive. Thailand's domestic vehicles are right-hand drive. Service parts such as filters, brake pads, bearings, belts and most engine components are shared across both versions of the same platform, but steering racks, headlamps, mirrors, wiper linkages and some dashboard and body parts are side-specific. Include the VIN, chassis code or OEM number for these lines.

Two commercial language zones

• English-speaking: Nigeria and Ghana, with currencies NGN and GHS.
• French-speaking: Côte d'Ivoire and Senegal, both using the West African CFA franc (XOF), which is pegged to the euro.

RFQs can be submitted in English. Buyers in French-speaking markets can include French product descriptions alongside OEM part numbers.

Ports and corridors

Lagos (Apapa and Tin Can Island), Tema, Abidjan and Dakar are the principal container gateways for the markets we cover, with Takoradi and San-Pédro as secondary ports. Abidjan and Dakar also serve inland countries such as Burkina Faso and Mali, and Tema handles transit cargo for Burkina Faso. Buyers who re-export inland should plan transit documentation with their clearing agent.

Import requirements

Several West African countries operate conformity assessment or cargo tracking programs, such as SONCAP in Nigeria and the cargo tracking note (BSC) in Côte d'Ivoire. Requirements change and differ by product, so buyers should confirm current rules with their clearing agent before shipment.

Product focus

Typical West African orders center on filters, suspension and steering parts, brakes, batteries and tires for pickups, minibuses and light trucks, with truck parts for Isuzu, Hino and Fuso fleets.
