Commercial characteristics

Central Africa's vehicle markets are shaped by long distances, a limited paved road network outside the main corridors, and demanding rainy-season conditions. Toyota pickups and 4x4 vehicles are widely used by businesses, public services and project operators, while trucks carry timber, agricultural produce and general cargo over long inland routes. These conditions put suspension and steering, brakes, bearings and belts and filters among the highest-turnover parts.

The countries of the CEMAC zone, including Cameroon, Gabon, the Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic, Chad and Equatorial Guinea, share the Central African CFA franc (XAF), which is pegged to the euro. French is the dominant commercial language, and Cameroon also uses English officially.

Drive side

The region drives on the right, so vehicles are left-hand drive. Thailand's domestic vehicles are right-hand drive, but most service parts are identical across both drive sides. Steering racks and boxes, lamps, mirrors, wiper linkages and some dashboard and body parts must be ordered in left-hand-drive versions and confirmed by VIN or OEM number.

Gateway country

• Cameroon: the Port of Douala is the main gateway for Cameroon and an important transit port for the Central African Republic and Chad. The deep-water Port of Kribi adds container capacity in the south.

What to stock for long inland supply chains

Replenishment cycles in Central Africa are long, and a missing part can keep a truck or pickup off the road for weeks while stock is reordered. Importers therefore tend to hold deeper stock of wear items with predictable consumption, such as oil, fuel and air filters, brake pads and shoes, clutch kits, wheel bearings, shock absorbers and belts, for the models that dominate their customers' fleets. Diesel pickups, 4x4s and medium trucks usually account for the largest share of these lines.

Documentation

Cameroon requires an electronic cargo tracking note (BESC) for imports, and other countries in the region operate similar systems. Requirements can change and may depend on the port of loading and final destination, so buyers should confirm the current rules with their clearing agent before shipment. Transit cargo for inland countries needs its own documentation plan.
