About Idler Pulleys

Idler pulleys guide belts around the drive and increase belt wrap on accessory pulleys. A noisy or seized idler can shred a belt within minutes, so idlers are typically replaced with belts on higher-mileage engines.

Pulleys may be steel or glass-filled polymer, grooved (ribbed) or smooth, with single or double-row sealed bearings. Specifications are outer diameter, width, bore or bolt size, dust shield design and whether the pulley is supplied with its bolt. Bearing quality and seal design determine life in dusty environments. Polymer pulleys should be checked for cracks and flash around the bearing seat. See also belt tensioners.
