About cv joints & boots

Constant velocity (CV) joints transfer torque through the changing angles of front drive shafts while allowing steering and suspension movement. On 4WD pickups with independent front suspension, such as the Toyota Hilux, Isuzu D-Max and Mitsubishi Triton, CV joints are heavily loaded in 4WD and are a common off-road wear item.

Joint types

  • Outer joints (Rzeppa or ball-type) – at the wheel end, allowing large steering angles.
  • Inner joints – at the differential end, typically tripod (tripod roller) or double offset joints (DOJ), allowing plunge as the suspension moves.
  • CV boot kits – rubber or thermoplastic boots with clamps and grease.
  • Complete drive shafts – shaft with inner and outer joints assembled; see drive shafts.

Boots and grease

Boot material matters. Chloroprene rubber boots are flexible and common; thermoplastic (TPE) boots resist cuts and heat better but need correct clamping tools. Grease must be CV-specific molybdenum or synthetic grease in the correct quantity.

Failure drivers

Torn boots are the root cause in most CV joint failures. Lifted suspensions increase joint angles and boot stress, and water crossings wash out grease if boots are damaged. Clicking when turning indicates outer joint wear; vibration under acceleration indicates inner joint wear.

  • Joint data: outer and inner spline counts, seal diameter, ABS tooth count, overall length.
  • Joint type: outer ball-type, inner tripod or DOJ; complete shaft or joint only.
  • Boot kits: material (rubber or thermoplastic), clamp type, grease quantity and whether tools are required.
  • Included parts: hub nut, circlips, boot clamps and grease sachets.
  • Quality checks: smooth articulation without notching, correct grease fill, ABS ring fit and consistent spline profile.
  • Packaging: individual boxes with spline caps and boot protection. Boots are easily punctured in bulk cartons.
  • Lifted vehicles: consider stocking heavy-duty boots and joints for markets with many lifted 4x4s, and communicate that lift height affects CV life.
  • Weight: joints are dense; check carton weights for handling.
  • Boot kit depth: boot kits are low-cost, high-turnover items that prevent joint failures. Stock them deeper than joints for the main 4x4 platforms.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to replace a CV joint or the whole drive shaft?

Replacing the complete drive shaft saves labor and ensures both joints and boots are new. Replacing a joint alone is cheaper in parts but takes longer. Many workshops choose complete shafts for 4x4 pickups.

Can a CV boot be replaced without replacing the joint?

Yes, if the boot is replaced early before dirt and water damage the joint. Once the joint clicks or has play, the joint should be replaced.

How do lift kits affect CV joints?

Lifting independent front suspension increases the operating angle of the CV joints. This increases wear and boot stress. Differential drop kits and moderate lift heights help reduce the angle.
