About Valve Stem Seals

Valve stem seals control oil flow down the valve guides. Worn or hardened seals cause oil consumption, blue smoke on start-up and carbon deposits on valves and in the combustion chamber.

Seals are specified by valve stem diameter, guide outer diameter, height and design (umbrella type or positive-lock type with or without integrated spring seat). Intake and exhaust seals may differ. FKM (fluoroelastomer) seals are common for heat resistance. Seals are sold as sets per engine and are usually included in head gasket sets. Installation requires protective sleeves to avoid cutting the lip on valve collet grooves. See cylinder head components.
