About Connecting Rod Bearings

Connecting rod bearings sit between the connecting rod big end and the crankshaft journal. They carry peak combustion loads and are sensitive to oil starvation, dilution and contamination, so they are replaced in every major rebuild and often after oil pressure problems.

Specify by engine code, size (standard or undersize step) and bearing design. Some diesel engines use different upper and lower shells or sputter-coated shells for high loads. Oil hole positions and tang locations must match the rod. Sets are supplied per engine, and sizes should be clearly marked on the back of each shell. Related: main bearings.
