About Cylinder Head Gaskets
Cylinder head gaskets seal combustion pressure, coolant and oil passages between the block and head. Overheating is the leading cause of failure, particularly on vehicles working hard in hot climates with neglected cooling systems.
Modern diesel head gaskets are multi-layer steel (MLS) with elastomer coatings, supplied in thickness grades identified by notches or holes. The grade is chosen by measuring piston protrusion above the block deck. Specify by engine code, grade and version. Head bolts are often torque-to-yield and should be replaced; they are usually sold separately. Pack gaskets flat in rigid cartons. See full gasket sets.
