About Piston Rings
Piston rings seal combustion pressure, control oil consumption and transfer heat from the piston to the cylinder wall. A typical set has a top compression ring, a second ring and an oil control ring per piston.
Diesel top rings are often keystone (tapered) designs with chrome or plasma coatings, while oil rings may be multi-piece or coil-spring expander types. Specify by engine code, bore diameter and oversize, ring widths and ring types. Rings wear quickly from dust ingestion and poor air filtration, resulting in blow-by, oil consumption and low compression. Sets should be boxed per engine with clear installation orientation marks.
