About Camshaft Seals

Camshaft seals prevent oil leaking from the cylinder head at the camshaft ends, most importantly behind the timing belt sprocket. An oil leak onto a timing belt shortens its life dramatically, so camshaft seals are commonly replaced during timing belt service.

Seals are specified by shaft diameter, housing bore diameter and width, plus lip material (FKM or NBR) and rotation-direction features. Engines with injection pump or balance shaft belts also have seals on those shafts. Seals are small and inexpensive but must be packaged to protect the sealing lip. Related: timing belts.
