About leaf springs & components

Leaf springs support the rear axle of almost every pickup and the front and rear axles of most light and medium trucks. They carry the full payload, locate the axle and absorb road shocks, which makes them a critical wear and failure item where overloading is common.

Spring types

  • Multi-leaf (conventional) springs – several leaves of decreasing length stacked and held by a center bolt and clips. Robust and easy to repair leaf by leaf.
  • Parabolic springs – fewer leaves with tapered thickness, lighter and with less inter-leaf friction, used on many trucks and some pickups.
  • Helper and auxiliary leaves – add load capacity at higher deflection.
  • Heavy-duty or progressive springs – aftermarket options for pickups carrying constant loads, canopies or accessories.

Failure drivers

Overloading causes sagging and broken main leaves; corrosion between leaves causes fatigue cracks; worn bushings and shackles cause noise and axle misalignment. On trucks such as the Isuzu NPR, broken center bolts and leaves are regular workshop jobs.

Specifications

Eye-to-eye length, width, leaf count and thickness, arch or free camber, eye diameter and bushing size, center bolt offset and position (front or rear, left or right). Center bolts are not always centered, so springs can be directional.

Buying & specification guide

  • OEM number for complete springs or individual leaves (leaf number within the pack).
  • Dimensions: length eye to eye, width, leaf count, thickness per leaf, free arch, eye type and bushing ID/OD.
  • Center bolt position relative to the front eye.
  • Load rating: standard, heavy-duty or progressive. Heavy-duty springs change ride quality and may affect vehicle registration in some markets; importers should check local rules.
  • Material and finish: spring steel grade, shot peening and paint or coating.
  • Kits: shackle and bushing kits simplify ordering for pickup refurbishments.
  • Freight: leaf springs are long, heavy and awkward to handle. They are typically bundled with steel strapping or palletized. Confirm bundle weights, overall lengths and how they will be secured in the container so they do not shift and damage other cargo.
  • Stock mix: individual main leaves are often in higher demand than complete springs in markets where spring repair shops rebuild packs.

Frequently asked questions

Can individual leaves be replaced instead of the full spring?

Yes, many repair shops replace a broken main leaf or individual leaves. However, a sagged or heavily fatigued pack is usually better replaced as a complete spring for consistent ride height.

Are parabolic springs interchangeable with multi-leaf springs?

Sometimes, if mounting dimensions and load capacity match, but ride and axle control change. Always confirm eye-to-eye length, width, center bolt position and rated load.

Do heavy-duty springs increase a pickup's legal payload?

No. Legal payload is set by the manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating and local regulations. Heavy-duty springs can reduce sag but do not change axle, tire or brake ratings.
