About accessory drive components
Accessory drive components connect the crankshaft to belt-driven accessories. They include crankshaft pulleys and torsional vibration dampers, overrunning alternator pulleys (OAP) and decouplers (OAD), fan pulleys and power steering or A/C pulleys.
Rubber-bonded crankshaft dampers deteriorate with heat and age; a separating outer ring throws the belt off and can damage the timing cover. Alternator clutch pulleys wear on diesel engines with high torsional vibration, causing belt noise and tensioner wear. Specify by OEM number, pulley rib count and diameter, and hub fitting. Crankshaft dampers are heavy and should be packed so the rubber element and ribbed surface are protected. See serpentine belts.
