About Voltage Regulators

Voltage regulators control alternator output to maintain the correct system voltage. A failed regulator causes undercharging, flat batteries, overcharging, bulb failures or damage to electronic components.

Most modern Japanese alternators use internal IC regulators integrated with the brush holder, identified by terminal configuration (such as IG, L, S, B, P). Older vehicles and some trucks use external regulators mounted on the body. Specify by alternator model or label number, voltage, terminal layout and connector. ECU-controlled charging systems do not use conventional regulators. Regulators should be packed individually to protect terminals. Related: alternator components.
