Most battery-importing markets outside Europe and North America run mixed vehicle fleets: Japanese and Korean pickups and cars alongside European passenger cars, vans and trucks. That means distributors stock two physically different battery families, JIS and DIN/EN. They are not interchangeable by capacity alone. This guide explains where they differ and how to handle substitution requests.
The two standards
- JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) batteries are fitted to most Japanese vehicles and many Korean and other Asian-built vehicles. Codes such as 46B24L, 80D26R or 115F51 identify performance rank, case group, length and terminal layout.
- DIN/EN batteries follow German and European standards and are fitted to most European vehicles. They are identified by DIN codes such as 57412, ETN numbers, and case size designations such as L3 or LB4.

Why height and hold-down matter
A DIN battery placed in a JIS tray may be too wide or too long even when its capacity matches, and without a top clamp point it cannot be held securely. A JIS battery placed in a DIN tray usually lacks the bottom ledge the clamp engages, and may be too tall for the hood or the terminal cover. An unsecured battery vibrates, which damages internal plates and can short against metalwork.
Venting in enclosed locations
Some European vehicles mount the battery inside the cabin, under a seat or in the luggage area. These installations use a vent tube to lead gases outside. Replacement batteries for such locations need a compatible degassing port and are typically AGM. This is not a JIS-versus-DIN question in itself, but it frequently rules out a straight JIS substitution.
Performance ratings are not directly comparable
Both standards state capacity in ampere-hours at a 20-hour discharge rate, which is broadly comparable. Cold cranking performance is not:
- JIS batteries are rated by the JIS test method, and many labels also show SAE or EN values.
- EN batteries state cold cranking current under the EN test method.
- SAE CCA (common in the Americas) uses a different test.
The same battery produces different cranking figures under each method. When comparing a JIS battery with a DIN battery, compare figures produced under the same standard, or ask the manufacturer for the equivalent. Do not compare a JIS performance rank (the leading number in a code such as 55B24L) with an EN cranking figure; the rank is not a current value.
Terminal layout
Both families come in two terminal layouts that are mirror images. JIS uses L and R; DIN/EN variants are distinguished by type number. Confirm against a drawing or the existing battery. Cable length on most vehicles allows only one layout.
When substitution is acceptable
Substitution between the families can work when a specific battery has been checked against the vehicle, but it should be a conscious engineering decision, not a stock convenience.

Some Japanese vehicles sold in European markets were fitted with DIN-type batteries, and some European-brand vehicles built in Asia use JIS types. The battery in the vehicle and the vehicle's documentation are the reference, not the badge.
Stocking a mixed range
Distributors in markets with mixed fleets typically stock:
- JIS B, D and E sizes for Japanese passenger cars, pickups and SUVs
- JIS F, G and H sizes or N120, N150 and N200 for trucks and buses of Japanese origin
- DIN L2–L5 and LB sizes for European passenger cars and light commercial vehicles
- Heavy-duty DIN sizes for European trucks and buses
Analyze the local vehicle population by origin before setting the mix. Markets importing used vehicles from Japan often have a much higher JIS share than new-vehicle sales suggest.
Technology choice
Both JIS and DIN families are made in flooded, EFB and AGM versions. The technology requirement is set by the vehicle's charging system, not by the case standard. See EFB vs AGM batteries.
