Start-stop systems, regenerative charging and higher electrical loads have moved many vehicles away from conventional flooded batteries toward two advanced lead-acid technologies: EFB (Enhanced Flooded Battery) and AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat). For distributors, the growth of these vehicles in export markets raises two practical questions: which technology does a vehicle require, and what happens if the wrong one is fitted. This guide covers both.
Why conventional flooded batteries are not enough
A conventional starter battery is designed to deliver a short, high current to crank the engine and then be recharged immediately by the alternator. It spends most of its life near full charge.
Start-stop vehicles work differently. The engine stops at idle while lights, climate control, infotainment and electronics continue to draw power. The battery then restarts the engine many times per journey. Many of these vehicles also use smart charging that deliberately keeps the battery below full charge to capture energy during braking. The battery therefore operates for long periods at a partial state of charge with frequent shallow cycling. Conventional flooded batteries suffer accelerated sulfation and plate wear under these conditions.
EFB construction
An EFB is still a flooded battery with free liquid electrolyte, but it is built for more demanding cycling than a conventional battery. Typical enhancements include:
- Carbon additives in the negative active material to improve charge acceptance
- Denser active material and reinforced grids
- A polyester scrim or similar layer on the positive plates to retain active material during cycling
- In some designs, features that reduce electrolyte stratification
EFB batteries are generally used on entry-level start-stop vehicles without extensive regenerative braking, and as an upgrade for vehicles with high electrical loads or frequent short trips.
AGM construction
In an AGM battery, the electrolyte is absorbed into fine glass fiber mats compressed between the plates. There is no free liquid electrolyte. AGM batteries are valve-regulated: gases produced during charging recombine inside the battery, and a pressure valve releases gas only under abnormal conditions.
Consequences of this design:
- High charge acceptance and cycling durability at partial state of charge
- No stratification, because the electrolyte is held in place
- Spill resistance, which allows installation in cabins, under seats and in luggage areas where the vehicle design calls for it
- Low internal resistance, supporting high current delivery
- Greater sensitivity to overcharging and high temperature compared with flooded designs, because lost water cannot be replaced

The European test standard EN 50342-6 defines requirements for batteries used in micro-hybrid (start-stop) applications, and battery manufacturers commonly cite it for EFB and AGM products.
Replacement rules
The vehicle manufacturer's specification sets the minimum technology:

Downgrading causes early battery failure, often within months, and can lead to start-stop system faults, warning messages and electrical problems. On many vehicles, particularly European models, the battery management system must also be told that a new battery has been fitted, and in some cases the battery type and capacity must be coded. Without this, the charging strategy may be wrong for the new battery. Distributors supplying workshops should make sure installers are aware of this requirement.
Upgrading a conventional application to AGM is not automatically beneficial. If the vehicle's charging voltage is not suited to AGM, or the battery sits in a very hot engine bay, an AGM may not deliver a longer life than a quality flooded or EFB battery.
Climate considerations
Heat shortens the life of every lead-acid battery by accelerating grid corrosion and, in flooded batteries, water loss. In hot markets:
- EFB batteries located in the engine compartment tend to cope well, provided they are the correct specification.
- AGM batteries are often mounted away from the engine by vehicle designers; when an AGM is specified for an engine-bay location, follow the battery manufacturer's temperature guidance.
- Dust, vibration and poor road conditions add mechanical stress; secure hold-downs matter for both technologies.
Identifying the technology required
- Read the label on the existing battery: EFB and AGM batteries are normally marked as such.
- Check whether the vehicle has start-stop: an auto stop-start button or indicator on the dashboard is a strong sign.
- Check the vehicle documentation or battery application catalog by make, model, engine and year.
- Note the battery location: cabin, seat or luggage-area installations with vent tubes typically call for AGM.
Sizing

Deep cycle is a different category
AGM technology is also used in deep cycle batteries for solar, marine and auxiliary power. A deep cycle AGM is designed for deep discharge and is not a direct substitute for a start-stop AGM starter battery, and the reverse is also true. See deep cycle batteries.
