About snorkels
Snorkels raise the engine air intake from inside the fender to roof height. They draw cleaner, cooler air in dusty conditions, which extends air filter life, and reduce the risk of ingesting water during river crossings. They are common on mining, agricultural, NGO, expedition and touring vehicles.
Construction
- Snorkel body – usually rotomolded, UV-stabilized linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) with a textured black finish.
- Air ram head – faces forward to collect air; some designs face rearward in heavy rain or dust.
- Pre-cleaner (cyclone) heads – spin out dust and water before the air enters the snorkel.
- Intake adaptor and seals – connect the snorkel to the vehicle's air box through the inner fender.
- Mounting brackets – attach the snorkel to the A-pillar or windshield frame.
Installation
Installing a snorkel typically requires cutting a hole in the fender using a template and drilling mounting holes in the A-pillar. Air box position differs between engines, so gasoline and diesel versions of the same model may need different snorkels. Proper sealing of every joint is essential; a leak below the water line defeats the purpose.
Limitations
A snorkel does not make a vehicle waterproof. Axle, gearbox and transfer case breathers, electrical components and cabin seals also limit safe wading depth. Air filter servicing remains important, especially with air filters in dusty operations.
Applications
Pickups such as the Isuzu D-Max and Toyota Hilux are frequently fitted with snorkels in rural and off-road markets, often alongside diff breather kits.

Frequently asked questions
Does fitting a snorkel allow deep water crossings?
It reduces the risk of water entering the engine intake, but vehicles have other limits such as breathers, electronics and door seals. Wading depth specified by the manufacturer still applies.
Do gasoline and diesel versions of the same pickup use the same snorkel?
Not always. Air box location and intake routing can differ between engines, which changes the snorkel design.
