Automotive Batteries for Distributors
Automotive and commercial vehicle batteries for distributors, with guidance on specifying battery types, dangerous goods shipping, container planning and managing stock freshness.
Batteries are a high-turnover product with specific technical, logistics and storage requirements. A battery distributor needs the right range for its vehicle parc and climate, a supplier that ships batteries correctly as dangerous goods, and stock that arrives in good condition.
Specifying batteries
Battery fitment depends on more than capacity. When requesting batteries, specify:
- Battery standard or group size, such as JIS, DIN/EN or BCI designations
- Dimensions (length, width, height) and hold-down type
- Terminal type and layout, including polarity position
- Voltage and capacity in ampere-hours
- Cold cranking amps or equivalent starting performance rating
- Technology: conventional flooded, maintenance-free, enhanced flooded (EFB), absorbent glass mat (AGM) or dry-charged
- Application: passenger car, pickup, SUV, commercial truck, start-stop vehicles
Japanese pickups and trucks commonly use JIS-sized batteries, but market variants differ. Validate by vehicle model and existing battery designation. See batteries.
Climate and use
High ambient temperatures accelerate battery aging. Buyers in hot climates often prioritize heat-tolerant designs and appropriate reserve capacity. Vehicles with heavy electrical loads, such as fleet vehicles with radios and lighting, may need higher capacity or deep-cycle-capable options. Discuss the operating conditions of your customers when requesting quotations.
Dangerous goods shipping
Many batteries are regulated for transport:
- Wet, filled lead-acid batteries: UN2794, Class 8
- Wet, non-spillable lead-acid batteries: UN2800, Class 8, with possible exceptions for batteries meeting specific test conditions
- Lithium-ion batteries: UN3480
Regulated batteries must be correctly packed, labeled, declared and segregated, and carrier acceptance must be confirmed for the route. Some carriers apply surcharges or restrictions. Dry-charged batteries, shipped without electrolyte, are handled differently, but the separate electrolyte, if supplied, is itself regulated. See shipping and logistics.
Container planning
Batteries are dense, so battery-only containers are usually limited by payload weight rather than volume. Batteries are loaded upright on pallets and secured to prevent movement. They can also form part of a mixed container with appropriate segregation.
Stock freshness
Filled batteries self-discharge during storage and transport. Good practice for distributors includes:
- Checking manufacturing date codes on arrival
- First-in, first-out stock rotation
- Checking voltage periodically and recharging stock as recommended by the manufacturer
- Ordering in quantities that match your sales rate
Date codes and battery labels are checked during pre-shipment quality control.
